Constipation

As many as 4 million Americans have frequent constipation. It has been found that many people who suffer with chronic constipation have “dyssynergic defecation” which means that the pelvic floor muscles that loop behind the rectum are not relaxing properly when one is attempting to defecate. Pelvic floor physical therapy including the use of SEMG biofeedback has been shown to be an effective treatment for teaching individuals how to properly relax and use the pelvic floor muscles to allow for improved emptying during bowel movements. In addition, patients also benefit from education in abdominal massage for improved motility, proper positioning when sitting on the toilet, and relaxation techniques.
