Pre-Natal/ Post-Partum

The ability to conceive, nurture, and grow a human being during the nine months of pregnancy is nothing short of miraculous, and motherhood, although not without challenges, is a priceless gift. However, during the childbearing years, the female body has to endure a lot of changes and adaptations, especially the pelvic floor muscles and the abdominal muscles. Many of the pelvic floor disorders discussed on this page occur as a result of the drastic and often traumatic changes during pregnancy and childbirth. Gratefully, our bodies are beautiful and resilient and with the proper rehab and training after pregnancy and delivery, women can restore proper pelvic floor muscle and abdominal strength and continue to live active lives. As recently as April of 2018, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists proposed a new paradigm for postpartum care in the “fourth trimester.” Pelvic floor physical therapy was mentioned as an important part of helping with the physical recovery after childbirth be it vaginal birth or Cesarean section. All women could benefit from instruction in pelvic floor/inner core strengthening and other education such as bladder/bowel function.
